Ten easy ways to organize in your community for the Global Day for Darfur

In my last blog I posted about the situation in Darfur. I also posted three actions you can take. Here are ten more direct actions you can take to remedy the situation in Darfur. These are lifted from http://www.dayfordarfur.org.

1. Host or help organize an event in your community on September 17th. Visit the Global Day for Darfur web site at www.dayfordarfur.org for more information on events taking place around the world. All documents in this packet and more resources are available on the website to help you coordinate an event.

2. Sign the Online Petition which you can find at the bottom of each page on this website or download and print off a paper version and ask your friends, family and colleagues to add their name to the Global Day for Darfur. Lobby your government and international officials on Darfur by sending an email to your elected leaders and UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan calling for an immediate and effective response to the crisis in Darfur. Visit the Global Day for Darfur website at www.dayfordarfur.org to send this email.

3. Wear a Blue Hat on September 17th. Go to the Global Day for Darfur website at www.dayfordarfur.org to find out how to obtain a hat to wear with thousands of people around the world to symbolize the need to protect the people of Darfur with a UN peacekeeping force.

4. Fundraise for Darfur. Include a fundraising component to your September 17th event for humanitarian relief in Darfur or to help fund humanitarian relief efforts in Darfur. BBC New Online provides a list of global aid organizations operating on the ground in Darfur at http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/3793577.stm.

5. Organize an interfaith service and/or candlelight vigil for Darfur.

6. Tell a friend about the Global Day for Darfur. Send an email about the Global Day for Darfur and events in your area to your organization’s members. Follow this link for sample text.

7. Visit an Embassy with other Darfur Activists. Coalitions, organizations, and activists are organizing a five week campaign to lobby the five permanent members of the UN Security Council by scheduling appointments with embassies and consulates of these five countries. Contact your national organization about participating in these visits.

8. Keep Darfur in the News. Send a letter-to-the-editor to your local or national newspaper about the crisis in Darfur, meet with their editorial boards to encourage more coverage, or ask local leaders to write op-ed's on Darfur. Follow this link for sample text.

9. Host a speaker. Arrange for a Darfur activist or Darfurian to address and educate your organization. For ideas about speakers who could visit your area, visit the Contact Us page and we will do our best to assist you.

10. Spread the word and raise awareness about Darfur. Put a Global Day for Darfur notice in your weekly bulletin and feature the Darfur issue in your monthly newsletter and on your web site, and put flyers and Darfur petitions/Global Day sign up sheets on bulletin boards and tables. Follow this link for sample announcements.
